Review of Mystic River (2003) by Richard D — 27 Mar 2018
Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon and Tim Robbins star as 3 men who shared a childhood trauma that they cannot escape. When they were young boys, two men posing as cops duped Robbins and kidnapped and abused him for days.
Their relationship has never mended. As men, Robbins has become subdued and clearly damaged, Penn a violent ex-con, and Bacon a cop. They are awkwardly thrown back together when Penn's eldest daughter is murdered and Bacon is investigating the case.
Some superficial evidence seems to point to Robbins. Not unexpectedly, tragedy ensues. This is a deep meditation on the permanent damage that violence can inflict. The three leads turn in incredible performances.
