Review of Mystic River (2003) by Derek E — 12 Jan 2011
Mystic river is another classic homocidal tale. With memorable displays of acting from Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, and Sean Penn, the story unfolds into two believable stories of who the murderer had to be.
However, two specific people in the story are completely unbelievable and act somewhat illogical at times: Tim Robbins and his wife. Not only does the wife's lack of faith in her husband almost ruin the story, but it makes it extremely predictable and ruins the essence of the many plot twists that follow.
Similarily, Tim robbins makes no sense as an innocent man who simply needs to answer a few questions. He does the exact opposite. Despite those two characters somewhat ruining the movie, the plot is solid and contains all the elements of a very standard homicide investigation.
However, the ending leaves me wondering why the wife should have any screen time (considering her sight made me cringe) and how Tim Robbins could be so stupid with his old friends. Apparently it was him getting in the car at the beginning that justifies all of this stupidity (you'll know what I mean if you've seen it).
If you want to witness once-in-a-lifetime acting from Sean Penn and love an emotional ride of an investigation with your classic, "all business" deputies, check this film out. But are the cops really all business? 8/10.
