Review of Mystic River (2003) by Lindsay W — 13 Jul 2013
Mystic River is definitely outside my wheelhouse. But Penn, Bacon and Robbins put in such strong and contrasting performances, that I was engrossed for most of the story. The pacing is spot on, and I'm pretty sure that I was exactly where Clint Eastwood meant me to be throughout the unfurling of the tale.
But it's not a story to love, and there are a few things in the wrap-up that play a little thin. It's also surprising that as good as the acting is, with the exception of a scene early on with Penn I didn't feel that gut-wrenching anguish that, thinking back, I really should have.
I will happily concede that Mystic River is, in one sense or another, a masterpiece; it's just not a film that will stick with me like a Shawshank.
