Review of Mystery Team (2009) by Rory P — 27 May 2009
Ugh, this was terrible. Stupid, juvenile, boring, and overall unfunny. I laughed a few times, sure, but man oh man this is dumb.
It's a silly story that is drawn out for nearly 2 hours, which is about an hour and 50 minutes too many. The Derrick Comedy team is best in small doses on the web, and they don't really have the chops for a full-length movie. A vast majority of the jokes here are either overused, drawn-out, unearned, or simply unfunny, and the same applies to the story. The writing is just... Bad. There are moments of funniness but they are few and far between, and completely disjointed.
The movie looks fantastic on a technical level, but does it fit the movie? I don't think so. I was bothered by it the whole time despite how freakishly gorgeous some of the shots are. It reminded me of the short-lived Fox reality show On The Lot. All of the short films on that show were beautifully photographed and professionally scored, but they totally lacked substance. That's what Mystery Team was for me. A beautiful piece of work with zero substance to back it up or justify it.
I was really really disappointed by this. I'd love to see these guys do something better in the future, but given how low they set the bar with this one, it shouldn't be too much to ask.
