Review of Mystery Team (2009) by David S — 29 May 2010
Unless you've been without internet access, or just don't like comedy, you would have most likely encountered a video on YouTube by the comedic group known as Derrick Comedy. Known for random, foul mouthed, and childish humor, its always worth watching, simply to see how far these guys can take the joke.
Mystery Team is the groups first feature length film, and it does a good job at maintaining the groups childish, parodying and innocent/nasty humor. There's not much suspense, and its obvious that the low budget restricted them from doing good stunts or action. But that's never stopped the group from making us laugh. The three main actors of the group play three 18 year olds, who still act as if they're 7, having been like this ever since their antics as young detectives of the Mystery Team entertained the entire town. Derrick Comedy takes this kind of innocent behavior, and drops the Mystery Team into the most perverse, underground locations such as a strip club, and makes them interact with vile characters, creating a very raunchy and foulmouthed environment. The laughs that come out of this match the similar styles of the groups YouTube sketches, but adds on an simple plot and character developments to make it more movie-esque, and for the most part they succeed.
Like Napoleon Dynamite and Super Troopers, Mystery Team is the kind of film that attracts a certain kind of audience, those who tire of mainstream comedy and chick flicks. But movies that were online sensations (Snakes on a Plane, Donnie Darko) never really do well with the general public. Luckily there's always home video, and on DVD, these films become incredibly popular and end up generating cult followings. Mystery Team is that kind of film. The kind that will appeal to fanboys, internet geeks, and those who enjoy random, stupid and nonsensical humor.
