Review of Mystery Team (2009) by Jonathan B — 02 Jun 2010

The infamous Derrick Comedy group that have made countless hilarious videos on youtube have now hit it big with their first major film, Mystery Team. And so, it's damn near tragic how a group of goofy kids can make their first comedy film and have it be FAR superior than 90% of the so-called "comedies" that keep showing up in theatres.

It's such a shame that Hollywood has reduced itself to such a loathsome level, not to mention drag sheepish movie audiences with them to that level and have them believe that the comedies that come out these days are actually fun and entertaining.

Ok, end of soapbox rant. Mystery Team is about a trio of high school seniors who run their own mystery solving business, and who have apparently never left the tender age of 8, mentally and physically.

The town enjoyed it when they were actually children, but now as adults, the entire town pretty much finds them to be the laughing stock. Things pick up when the Mystery Team are given their biggest assignment ever: a murder mystery involving a young girl's mysteriously murdered parents.

Add to that some hilarious roles from the very lovely Aubrey Plaza (Funny People) and Bobby Moynihan (in a scene-stealing role as Jordy, the Mystery Team's only fan). Watch in hilarious glory as the Mystery Team tackle/avoid many adult issues and situations in what will definitely be the most underrated and best unknown comedy of this year.

It's absolutely hilarious and it's all done with a very simplistic plot and storyline, but don't fret, there are plenty of over-the-top, yet strangely subtle raunchy moments throughout this gem.

If you're not an idiot when it comes to comedies, you will seriously enjoy Mystery Team! I promise.
