Review of Mystery Team (2009) by Chris V — 31 Jul 2010
It was hard not to rate this as 100%. if you are a longtime of internet sketch group Derrick Comedy as I am, you've probably already seen this and loved it. I highly reccomend it for Derrick fans and reccomend it for fans of other sharply whitted movies such as The Hangover.
It surpassed my own expectations for the film, combining Derrick's trademark wit and sensibility with memorable characters and some unforgettable scenes. However, it is easy to tell this is the groups first experience outside the realm of YouTube, as the wit is also accompanied by gags concerned with mostly vomiting at random times and deciding to do some business in a punch bowl.
Mystery Team tells the story of the titular group, child detectives who are now 18 and still solving kiddie crimes. when a little girl asks them to solve a murder, they can't help but try to solve a 'real' case.
Jason (played by Donald Glover)is the unofficial lead of the film, a would-be master of disguise. He is joined by D.C. Pierson as Duncan Wheeler, a boy who memorized a book of wacky facts, and Charlie, played by Dominic Dierkes, who is like the dumb, strong guy but without the strong part.
The three leads also wrote the screenplay and Derrick's Dan Eckman directed it. There are several quotable laugh out loud scenes to the film, which really gloss over the more lull and hit-and-miss parts of the movie.
and though Derrick nearly knocked it out the park here, an already good movie is a great sign of how awesome future Derrick pictures will be as they gain experience.
