Review of Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (1996) by Paul N — 16 Jan 2009

The guys (well, one guy and two robots... wait: one guy, a robot and, uh, a sentient gumball machine) from the TV series of the same name provide a fitfully funny piss-taking commentary on a cornball 50s sci-fi flick (THIS ISLAND EARTH), which is framed by a reasonably lame wraparound story about why they're in space watching bad films and the tormentor who put them there.

It's tempting to bring up something about people in glass houses, but that seems far too churlish. The MST3K crew know it's all in fun and, while it isn't quite the undergraduate gutbuster it yearns to be, I like where they're coming from.

Most of the time. I'd strongly recommend having a few ales (or your preferred narcotic) before watching this one...
