Review of Mysterious Skin (2005) by Zee T — 16 Apr 2010
This is a fine example of how some books are better left as books. For a topic as taboo as pedophilia, the director does well at casting the two intense leads, but writes an unimaginative screenplay where subtext is as missing as the characters' fathers.
Its so-called critical acclaim was probably bourne out of its gratuitous sex scenes and shock value, worsened by its painfully slow pacing, disjointed tone and flat cinematography. A one-dimensional telling of a heartbreaking scar.
