Review of Mysterious Skin (2005) by Mike T — 14 Apr 2011
Mysterious Skin looks, feels, and sounds like an emotionally fuelled dream. Araki's stylistic and formal choices enhance that quality, and the result is a film that I cannot accurately compare to any other.
The subject matter, which is enormously complex and equally unpleasant, is handled with maturity and an appropriate amount of open-mindedness. Joseph Gordon-Leviit's performance is one of the greatest pieces of acting in recent memory, worth comparison to something we'd see from a young DiCaprio or even James Dean.
This film haunts me. Once I came to understand its implications and power, I could not shake it off. I love it for that.
