Review of My Wife is a Gangster (2001) by Jeremie D — 14 Jul 2010
This action/comedy/drama isn't going to blow any minds but is a worthy addition to the great spate of films coming from Korea over the last decade or so. It is the story of a gangster trying to please her dying sister by marrying someone. She chooses a quiet civil servant to be her husband and the film then focuses on their growing relationship. She slowly starts to warm towards him and he slowly begins to realise that there is something different about her.
I really enjoyed this film and though hardly original, it did have have enough going on to keep me entertained. I do have to drop a star for the final act though where the filmmakers really do drop the ball. I shan't give away what happens, suffice to say that it is something quite dramatic. The problem with this thing happening is that the film hasn't quite earned this dramatic climax. Also, the issue is simply forgotten about soon after when it is an event that should not at all have been treated in such an odd way. In fact, the event had no place in a film like this. Why on Earth they decided to have this thing happen is beyond me and it really did ruin the film for me.
