Review of My Week with Marilyn (2011) by Yoshi S — 21 Apr 2012
Michelle Williams is a revelation - thank goodness they casted her for this role, there is no one better. She is the one reason to watch this film, the one reason that makes this film a must see. The luminous Michelle Williams goes bone-deep here.
The film itself is entertaining, suffering from a lot of imperfections tho. The script is shallow and the direction is very uneven. This indifferently shot film winds up being another in a long line of creative works by men that exploit the legacy of Marilyn Monroe for their own satisfaction and little public good. At moments, this film is very sweet, but it doesn't dig deep and shows nothing we didn't already know. The film is decent, sadly not memorable.
But why four stars? Michelle Williams saves this film from being a complete misfire. You should throw diamonds at that woman, the way she brings to life Monroe's inner demons and her movie-star allure with equal aplomb, is brilliant. She is unpredictable, odd and magnetic. She really glows.
