Review of My Week with Marilyn (2011) by Kay K — 08 Jan 2013
This film shows a snippet of the life of 'the world's most famous star' Marilyn Monroe. It wasn't the most eventful, dramatic or even interesting week of the star's life but this film had so much truth it didn't matter. She is seen through the eyes of a young production assistant on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl. In the past, actresses have tended to overplay Marilyn, from her breathy voice to her childlike qualities and at times overt sexuality.
But Michelle Williams knocked it out of the park with her subtle and meaningful portrayal - she showed the stark contrast between public Marilyn, the attention loving bombshell and private Marilyn, riddled with insecurities and at times childish, overmedicated and hard to deal with. The supporting cast was stellar - Judy Dench, Eddie Redmayne and Kenneth Branagh were absolute stand outs.
