Review of My Week with Marilyn (2011) by Margarita S — 05 Mar 2014
Performances are what make this film. Branagh and Williams are remarkable as Olivier and Monroe. What this movie lacks though is insight. Due to the lack of cinematic interpretation, Marilyn's lateness on set and Olivier's tirades become predictably repetitive and boring.
We never really understand why she struggles with such debilitating self-esteem issues. Although Colin's infatuation and time with Marilyn should be the thread that holds this film together, it doesn't and it's clear that this is in part due to greater and sometimes unnecessary screen time being allocated to the bigger stars at the expense of story development.
