Review of My Summer of Love (2005) by Little R — 12 Jun 2007
The Clever Murder of Feelings and Marriage of the Mind. That is exactly what this intensely thought-rendering quasi-romantic movie is all about.
My Summer of Love had been on my possession for about 3 days. Who knows how I decided to watch this movie, only I found an amazing solace with this clever movie in a movie with the perfect ending.
Set some place in the summer, in a small English town that I?d say is somewhere either in Northern England or even Scotland, though not specifically established in the movie (and apparently somewhere near Yorkshire) this movie is about two girls who met by chance in this quiet pastoral setting of a region. One a local girl named Mona (nicknamed by her brother who thought she moaned all the time as her real name was Lisa) and a wealthy, well-educated and imaginative proper girl on Holiday for the summer, named Tamsin.
Mona had just purchased a scooter without an engine and took a nap in the light of a lazy summer day when she meets Tamsin on a horse. From here, the movie quickly develops the evolving relationship between the two with a magnetic chemistry established between the two.
Over the rest of the movie the two character?s bond, Tamsin with her seductive poetic flare for beauty, she wins over Mona?s passionate heart and desire to be with a person she could connect with given the fact that she had just been dumped by a man who treated her pretty much like a piece of meat.
The dialogue throughout this movie is captivating, hypnotic and seductive. The beautiful and youthfully seductive Emily Blunt plays Tamsin. We are easily convinced by her intelligence and alluring aura. The cute, vulnerable and charming Nathalie Press plays Mona. We are also just as much easily convinced by her passionate, down to earth murky naivet?hat makes the viewer want to latch on to her and give her a big hug all the time.
Mona?s brother, an ex convict pub owner now turned into a Born-again Christian plays an amazing role in this film.
The energy throughout this movie is quiet, introspective, hypnotic, and amazingly layered by intelligent grounded ness.
We are so convinced by the passionate development and love of these two characters, that, the surprise ending is the perfect balance, climax and resolution for the rest of the movie.
The writing is impeccable, the style of filming is effective and the gestures, spoken voice and flow of scenes throughout the movie are whimsical, natural, and very convincing.
The ending of the movie is what made this an ?A? movie. I was going to give it an A- but the ending made it an A for me.
I'd say that a lazy Sunday Summer Afternoon is the ideal time to watch this movie.
On the face of it, the movie seems like it is nothing more than a Lesbian Summer of Love coming of age movie that parallels Thelma and Louise, but trust me, the movie to me is much more than that.
The ending is victorious to me, giving the deceived broken heart underdog a dignity more beautiful than the most perfect love itself.
This movie is like David and Goliath only Goliath was a ritzy, seductive Cleopatra.
PS-Did I say how beautiful the music was? The Edith Piaf song at the end gave me goosebumps and effusions of excitement.
The ending! I loved it!
