Review of My Suicide (2009) by Alifiannisa L — 25 Apr 2010
From the title, you can probably surmise that this movie is a bit of a downer. Archie (Gabriel Sunday), a loner in high school, shocks his film class by declaring that he's going to kill himself on film for his video project. This sets off a tumultuous chain of events and catches the attention of Sierra (Brooke Nevin), the girl he's infatuated with. They grow closer, but Archie finds out that his ideal girl has got some demons of her own.
I felt that the style of the film was a bit distracting. In a Q&A with the director after the screening I attended, he stated that they wanted to film the movie in the way a high school boy would do it. There's lots of quick, overly stylistic editing and a fair amount of animation when Archie is recording his thoughts. It was kind of distracting and I would preferred more traditional cinematography.
The film does improve in the second half, both from a stylistic and a plot perspective. In the end, it delivers plenty of thoughtful musings about the nature of life and death, and how all of our decisions affect the people around us.
