Review of My Stepmother Is an Alien (1988) by Nowak N — 19 May 2009
There are two types of 80s film - timeless classics and ghastly, confusing atrocities unhealthily fixated with sex and bad music. From the opening bars, I knew this was going to be one of the latter.
The plot is so fast it would kill you if you got in its way, it's so limp you can't get a handle on it, it's utterly unexplained and the characters are bafflingly unpredictable. Steven (Dan Aykroyd) is supposed to be shy, but has sex with alien Celeste (Kim Basinger) three hours after meeting her and when she tries to leave the next morning, proposes marriage, while getting awards for worst father of the year. Jessie (Alison Hannigan) is unconvincingly glad her father is sleeping around and then suddenly supposed to be suspicious of the stepmother, but keeps randomly forgetting this. As for the alien, who knows what her plot is - why is a radar signal destroying her planet? Why is her handbag evil? Why does she have any interest in this crummy story?
The highlight has to be the few seconds Seth Green is in it, apparently about 13, but so small you could fit him in a shoebox. The one moment the film made me laugh.
Dire.
