Review of My Soul to Take (2010) by Sally A — 18 Mar 2011
'Hello? Ripper?' Really?! There is so much wrong with this film that it is entertaining purely out of fascination. The story makes absolutely no sense, the dialogue is boggling (I refer to the preceding quote), at no time is the basis for the story, this 'bad soul' that is obviously possessing people, EVER explained AT ALL.
Wes Craven is getting a little long in the tooth to write teen slashers, the setting and characters are horrendously cliched - the weird and mysterious kid (who is however very attractive) and his pal, the bully jock, the bitch (who actually is just fragile), the teen queen and two token minorities! In fact the three female leads are a blonde, a red-head and a brunette! It is just horrible.
So many scenes are borrowed from Cravens more successful franchises but by doing so he just compares great work with awful work. Having said all that, the production values are certainly better than your run of the mill teen slasher, it had that big budget sheen - if only it had an old-school indie plot! Wes, I love you - the Nightmare films, the Scream films - I like 'Summer of Fear' and yes, even 'Deadly Friend'.
I'm not ashamed to say that, but this, this is a 'Senior Moment' - let's learn from our mistakes hmmm?
