Review of My Soul to Take (2010) by Ben B — 27 Jun 2011
My Soul to Take is from the horror icon Wes Craven, so when his name is attached, there is a certain level of quality expected and while, My Soul to Take is definitely not on par with classics like Nightmare on Elm Street or Scream, I don't get the hate towards the movie as it is a perfectly acceptable slasher movie with a few decent scares and an interesting but unfocused plot.
Craven obviously had a passion towards this story considering he wrote the script as well and it shows as the premise is quite intriguing and the film opens with a rather effective scare-filled bang but it sadly loses itself as the movie goes on and the lame twist ending feels outdated as it goes for unpredictability but fails.
The casting is all over the place with My Soul to Take, a few of the teen actors deliver solid performances but the rest are mediocre to awful. It isn't all their fault as the script only really develops a couple of them as leaves the rest as simple generic genre characters to be picked off.
(Hot girl, Jock douchebag, etc.) The strongest aspect of My Soul to Take is Craven's direction, it creates a decent sense of tension and the movie looks really good. Overall, My Soul to Take isn't a particularly amazing horror film by any means but it wasn't as bad as I was prepared for.
Wes Craven is capable of producing better material but the story had enough thrills and chills to keep me watching and Craven's visual sense for horror is still as strong as it once was.
