Review of My Soul to Take (2010) by Salah A — 08 Nov 2012
A really incredible, unique and impressive Horror movie from Suspense Master Wes Craven. My Soul To Take is a great Supernatural Horror movie that is a mixture of Wes Craven's Scream and several Possession films.
I seriously enjoyed this movie and I don't get the reason on why lots of critics hate this movie I mean when I watched it I didn't get bored with it and I'm planning to watch it again and it has all of the things you need in a Horror movie because this film has some of the most original styles and techniques used in a Horror movie.
The plot of this film is simple and the movie is about a group of kids who are terrorized on they're 16th Birthday by the Riverton Ripper who promises to return to kill all the kids in Riverton in exactly 16 years and Bug Hellerman also must confront the Riverton Ripper who is later on revealed by his Sister Leah as Abel Plenkov who is also Bug's father and Bug must stop the Riverton Ripper on his killing spree before he becomes the next victim of the Riverton Ripper.
I did enjoy this movie a lot and to be honest I was amazed and fascinated with it. I just didn't get some of the reasons on why critics hate this film and I don't even know if Horror fans will appreciate this movie and it's hard to tell but the film itself has all of the things you need from a Horror movie and Wes Craven delivers another pull on your sleeve with this movie because the whole film has everything that you need in a Horror movie and it's just great for one reason.
What's great about My Soul To Take is that the film has a lot of genuine scares and suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat and there are lots of suspenceful scenes in this film. The opening scene where Abel Plenkov kills his wife and father is one of the most suspenceful scenes in the film.
The scene where Abel attacks one of the Coroners in the Ambulance and the Ambulance starts to flip off the ground and Abel vanishes from the Ambulance is also one of the most original and suspenceful scenes in the film as well and I did like those scenes in the film.
I also like the climax scene where Adam Bug Hellerman gets attacked by the Riverton Ripper in they're house after killing a couple of people and that is also one of the most intense parts of the film as well and it was a thrilling scene to watch so far.
The other things I like about My Soul To Take is that the film has a lot of haunting settings. The Riverton bridge looks great and fascinating and it creates a gothic and haunting feel while the woods setting looks creepy as well and I love the settings of this movie and it looks great so far.
Other than that the other things I like about My Soul To Take is that the film also has a lot of creepy moments. The scene where Adam Bug Hellerman starts saying weird words that other people keep saying is one of the most creepiest moments in the film and I like how Bug Hellerman copies what other people are saying and it is so creepy and I did like the ideas so far.
What I also like about My Soul To Take is the Riverton Ripper. I have to admit Wes Craven created a really creepy and scary killer and the RIverton Ripper's costume is freaky as hell and it's such a big surprise because the Riverton Ripper is one of the best Horror killers ever made by Wes Craven since Freddy Krueger's A Nightmare On Elm Street and the RIverton Ripper also bares similarities to Wes Craven's Ghostface killer from the Scream Movies and I like how Wes Craven created a killer with several similarities to his previous Horror films so far.
While the movie does have all of those the other things I did enjoy about My Soul To Take is the kills in the movie. Most of them are done in a Scream like style and the way the Ripper kills his victims is really suspenceful and done in a Scream like style and there are lots of gruesome kills in the film.
The scene where Jay gets killed is really gruesome and suspenceful. Penelope's death was unique and suspenceful as well. While Brandon and Brittany's death are intense and gruesome as well. And the other kills are completely off screen and it could have been better so far.
What I also like about this film is that the movie shares similarities to Wes Craven's Scream trilogy. There are lots of similarities to this movie. The way the killer talks is really similar to the Scream trilogy and the scene where Bug discovers that Alex was the one who killed everyone is a really similar twist from the Scream movies only done in a possession style because this movie shares similarities to several possession films and I like Wes Craven's idea so far.
The biggest downside with this movie is the lack of Originality and the movie could have been better for one reason. Now the acting is great the casts did a great job with they're roles in the film so far.
Director and Writer Wes Craven created a really unique and intense Horror film filled with lots of jumps, thrills and genuine scares as well and I hope he makes more Horror movies in the near future as well.
Overall My Soul To Take gets an 8/10 because the film has everything you need for a Horror movie but it could have been better for one reason due to the lack of Originality within the film for one reason but I enjoyed watching this entertaining Horror movie.
