With Herzog and Lynch collaborating, I knew I was in for a journey through the bizarre and unexplainable. But unlike any movie from either writer/director, the collective effort falls short because it ultimately lacks substance and banks on intrigue.
It wastes great performances from a stellar cast, and leaves you puzzled without making you care to wonder what Brad (Michael Shannon) was really going through. We never see the before to compare to the after, so its hard to hold onto any opinion.
He went crazy, but how less crazy was he before? We don't know and so we don't care. Shannon is great as is everyone else. The story is simply weak, and that is unfortunate and intolerable coming from 2 greats. I expect more from this duo.
