Review of My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done (2010) by Matthew S — 15 Mar 2015
A tragedy of matricide told via noir-like flashback with the beautifully convoluted vision of cliche Mad Man Werner Herzog. Michael Shannon doesn't just act the part of the delusional son, he genuinely seems insane and that believability creates an honest aura of disturbing reality.
Not a fun watch per se. And that makes me think that Michael Shannon should definitely be Werner Herzog's new Klaus Kinski. I'd sit down to watch any film they did together. But film is not just about performance.
And as the film progresses it basically plods a course you expect. It's not bad or uninteresting, but it doesn't really break any new ground either. Strong performances from the whole cast (gotta love Brad Dourif's intense Uncle ostrich farmer and Udo Kier's stunned director) and gorgeous digital video cinematography.
..I just felt the story was lacking significance. VF.
