Review of My Sister's Keeper (2009) by Jeffrey G — 13 Aug 2012
I was so very underwhelmed with this film. The cast is uniformly excellent, with the exception of Diaz, who plays the never-give-up mom as more self-serving bitch than someone who would do anything for her daughter. Thank goodness the film belongs to young Abigail Breslin, who positively glows. I have to say, in the hands of a director who trusted his material, script and audience more than Mr. Cassavetes does, this could have been a fine, fine film about a family in turmoil and tragedy. As it standsm, Cassavetes goes for the easy tear instead of something a bit more profound.
Also, when one has a relative with cancer, everything, apparently, happens in slow motion. Really, did anyone else notice how many scenes are needlessly in slow motion?
