Review of My Scientology Movie (2016) by Timothy A — 13 Oct 2016
There are two things wrong with the title "My Scientology Movie" and neither of them is the word "My". Though this might be one of those endeavours where the risk of failure isn't an excuse not to try, Theroux's investigations, such as they are, yield nothing that hasn't already become public knowledge in the last decade or so, and his voice isn't strong enough here to justify riffing on the already knowns.
The idea to have an actor recreating scenes as David Miscavige is interesting (hiring a double for Tom Cruise is not) but it isn't sufficiently impactful to justify the lead up. Not only is this not cinematic in the slightest, it isn't even great by the standards of its natural home, television.
