Review of My Policeman (2022) by Hannahwashere — 30 Mar 2023
A truly fine film. My Policeman has caught a lot of flack since its release due to the casting of Harry Styles as 'Tom'. In my opinion, there are no glaring flaws in his performance and he holds up well next to the likes of Emma Corrin.
Fundamentally, My Policeman is a slightly bland and misguided adaptation of Bethan Roberts' novel. The script makes strange departures from the novel and is not at all helped by the marketing of this film as a tragic love story rather than an exploration of desire.
The character of 'Marion'has suffered most greatly in this adaptation, being understood as a villain rather than a victim by most viewers. If not for the focus on Styles this film would have existed as a decent independent film rather than another excuse to berate the singer's acting abilities.
