Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Bryan T — 09 Apr 2008
I only watched this film becuse my sister told me to and she wanted to watch it because the deceased River Pheonix (Joaquin Pheonix's brother) was in it. The first part of the film left me wondering what the hell was going on around. It was slow and confusing. But it becomes clear later on that this film is a modern take on Shakespearen themes and characters. In fact, this story was influenced by Shakespeare's Henry VI. This idea is then well carried till the end of the movie and I'd say that my favourite scences are when Bill's intelligence is questioned by Reeves and the ending scene which shows how vastly different the fortunes of both boys have turned.
The sex scenes are also quite ingeniously shot and instead of continuous filming, the stills capture the intensity in the characters.
The movie has its light moments too when Hans decides to give Keanu and River a dance performance from days gone by.
