Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Andres B — 21 Nov 2011
This is the first earlier Gus Van Sant film I've seen, and it's completely different from any of his later works, though is acute sensibilities remains. It's amazing to see a movie that blends shakespeare with a story about a narcoleptic street hustler.
The film is surreal, and as it goes on, it strips down it's lead character more and more until his true soul is all we're left with. It becomes meaningful. I really enjoyed Keanu Reeves' performance, but River Phoenix gives simply one of the best performances of the 90s and one of my favorite ever.
He becomes his role. This film is really a landmark for independent film making.
