Don't let the cast fool you - it shouldn't play in Kansas City. Nothing conventional or really accessible (not that it's supposed to be) about this sad parable about northwestern male prostitutes (Phoenix and Reeves).
Still, a strong performance from Phoenix, who died tragically shortly after this release. I'd like to have seen where his career would have gone. Van Sant's done better work in the same vein (see ELEPHANT, GERRY or LAST DAYS).
