I don't know if this movie can be called Van Sant's opus magnum, but it's my favorite of his films (I haven't seen all of Drugstore Cowboy yet, but I bet that would totally be a fave). Idaho has the attitude of an epic coming-of-age movie mixed with the gravitas of a tidy, little independent road movie; and it fits nicely into the canon of Van Sant the auteur.
