Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Romaric R — 16 Aug 2010
What I think is that it is a very strange but a challenging film to watch. Acting is not superb but it is just plain and simple. The director's points in this movie is to: get the most important scene at the right timing and at the right framing to capture the feelings and emotions of these characters, to use some beautiful scenery and shots to fulfill to the whole plot of the film, and the most important thing is, to make the audiences and critics decide whether they think that this film works or not. As you can see, there are some unique and interesting shots and frames used by director Gus Van Sant to focus more on the issue of homosexuality and narcolepsy which most people don't know anything about it, that's why Van Sant tells us more about Scott (Keanu Reeves) and Mike's (River Phoenix) journey.
Well, did this work for me, YES, IT DID. Though it is not the same as Van Sant's after films like â??Good Will Huntingâ?? and â??Milkâ??, still it was a film that makes us think whether we care a lot to the story or to the characters in the movie.
