Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Maxwell S — 29 Jul 2012
A masterpiece, but not quite in the normal way. It's a masterpiece because of how gorgeous and enchanting it is, but it has such a simple (yet devastating) story. It doesn't try to make itself better than the boundaries of film, but it still manages to be unlike anything ever made.
On one hand it could be called "Gays of Heaven" (had to say it), but "Days of Heaven" has beautiful visuals, but manages to maintain a brilliant story by film standards. "My Own Private Idaho" doesn't have such a literate story as "Days of Heaven", but it all works into getting lost in the film.
It takes a shocking, simple story and making it feel so natural. The second time you view it, your heart is already in the place the films was the whole time, rather than catching up to it 30 minutes later, which is a flaw and innovative idea.
