Van Sant was working on two different projects before blending them into "My Own Private Idaho." The result is compelling but incongruous. The loose re-telling of "Henry IV" is a misfire, and it dilutes an otherwise excellent road movie.
As for River Phoenix, he delivers a great performance. possibly the best one he ever gave.
