Review of My Own Private Idaho (1991) by Brian S — 08 May 2011
Parts of this movie I like, and other parts I can't stand. I enjoyed River Phoenix's character and the storyline surrounding him--a slightly over-angsty search for meaning. his acting wasn't great, but it was betting than anyone else's.
Keanu Reeves and the whole "retelling of Henry IV" really irritated me. terrible acting aside, it was an overdeveloped subplot for what should have been a supporting character. Van Sant wasn't even the slightest bit creative adapting Shakespeare's story--the dialogue was almost verbatim (and thus grossly out of place), the Falstaff character was incredibly weak, and the transition from future King of England to possible future mayor of Portland, Oregon really fails to capture the same kind of atmosphere and intensity.
overall sloppy with very few redeeming qualities.
