Review of My Old Lady (2014) by Dan D — 24 Oct 2014
MY OLD LADY is a good lesson in why playwrights should not adapt and then direct their own stage work for the screen. Israel's Horowtiz's film version of his play enfolds in such a routinized and weary way, it begs for a breath of fresh air.
Too bad because Horowitz is working with heavy hitters here. The beloved Maggie Smith plods elegantly through all of it and releases some real acting in two key scenes. The luminous Kristin Scott Thomas relies on impeccable timing to make the clumsiest scenes somehow work (barely).
Kevin Kline, around whose character the whole movie revolves, looks like the entire experience was painful. That's no help in taking this mediocre tale to a more appealing level.
