Review of My Name Is Khan (2010) by Betty S — 24 Jan 2012
The beginning outshone the end. The film could have ended after the airport scene, which summarised the message of the film soooo well. My name is Betty and I'm not what you think I am :D.
Another scene that moved me was the flashback scene. I imagined seeing my own life. That's never happened to me before...
Back to critiqing the film...the mix of Western with Asian did not work for me. I prefer pure Bollywood, putting it in Western context diluted the film's potency in my humble opinion. Humbleness, humility it was the only message that seemed to be strengthened by the context but that may also be due to the main character's asperger's syndrome. This film is uplifting but comes across as too 'clean' and sickly sweet to my British eyes and ears. Many of the mundane things about life did not seem to exist in this film which made it difficult to connect with the characters. The female character especially. The children in the film were another weak point. I actually laughed when the white child bawled. Nevertheless I can't deny I was affected. The name Ghandi and the words inner-child spring to mind.
