Review of My Name Is Bruce (2007) by Elise M — 21 Mar 2009
My Name Is Bruce is the Bruce Campbell film of all Bruce Campbell films. Marketed towards Bruce Campbell fans for Bruce Campbell fans. Aside from the obvious B movie style and salute to the great Bruce Campbell, the film lacks any ingenuity to itself.
The concept is that the washed up B movie actor Bruce Campbell, played by Bruce Campbell, falls into the small town of Gold Lick. He unsuspectingly believes that it's an acting opportunity and paid seminar but quickly discovers that the town has actually acquired him to fight the Chinese demon of bean curds.
While the concept alone has been done, better with Three Amigos than with this flick, the film doesn't deliver anything fresh. Both the script and acting are so poor and lifeless that I've seen the zombies in Army of Darkness deliver a more believable acting job.
The one bright spot is, as always, Bruce Campbell. He has such an elegant easy charm about him that even though the lines he delivers are so cheesy, I can't help but smile when he says them. Genuinely funny moments sandwiched by goofy over-the-top gag jokes squelch the "fun" factor of the film at times, and make it nearly unbearable.
Ted Raimi does a nice job playing three distinct characters but again this film is first and foremost meant for those Bruce Campbell fans and not for just anybody.
