Review of My Name Is Bruce (2007) by Patrick E — 13 Jun 2010
Bruce Campbell is probably the most famous B-Movie actor of his generation, and rightly so, as he has been in some very good B-Movies, namely the Evil Dead series and Bubba Ho-Tep. This film is basically a parody of his film career which he directed himself but sadly it is a pretty awful film, much worse than the usual films he stars in. Firstly the acting, apart from Bruce, is awful throughout, so bad that it's not even funny. The jokes are mostly in-jokes which reference his previous films, which means if you are not an expert in the career of Campbell you just won't get. They few "ordinary" jokes that exist are just plain unfunny and leave the viewer cringing in embarrassment more than anything else. The plot is reasonably interesting, a Chinese War God is unleashed in a small American town and the only plan the townsfolk can come up with is to kidnap Bruce Campbell the famous Monster Film actor in order to rid them of of the War God. Campbell thinks that he is simply starring in another awful movie. It's a good premise and should have afforded the writers to bombard us with some great B-Movie jokes but it just didn't happen. Add to that some really awful effects for the War God, almost zero action and a very underwhelming climax and you end up with a boring dud of a film. For me the writers were simply relying on Campbell fans to watch the film whether it was good or not so they put minimal effort into this stinker.
Avoid 4/10.
