Review of My Man Godfrey (1936) by Adrian B — 14 Dec 2010
The film is absolutely lovely, and perhaps, the best comedy of the 1930's. It follows a wealthy girl Irene (Carole Lombard) and a forgotten man (William Powell), in which Irene and her family hire the man to become their butler, for which the wealthy girl falls in love with him.
It is a shock for me to like this film, because a number of comedies from this period of time have become dated and aren't all that funny anymore. This is a golden nugget of a movie. The film is beautiful, it is funny, sophisticated, has great dialogue, and fabulous acting, with William Powell in particular quite fine.
The film even coined a wonderful term called "forgotten man," which is synonymous for bum, or homeless individual. What a very nice film.
