Review of My Man Godfrey (1936) by Alex S — 05 Oct 2007
The idea of a bum becoming a butler for some high-and-mighty family is an interesting premise, even if it is another "fish out of water" story. What makes this work so well is William Powell as the title Godfrey.
His calm and level-headed approach to all situations, even the seemingly out of nowhere tacked-on happy ending, allows us to get in his shoes and experience the insanity around him. It is very interesting to think that a film made in 1936 could still hold up as well today when it comes to situational comedy.
