Review of My Man Godfrey (1936) by Matthew D — 30 Nov 2009
MY MAN GODFREY is not only the best screwball comedy of all time [in my opinion] but, arguably, one of the best films of all-time. Funny but never sacrastic, elegant without ostentation, and moral without ever being blatant, everything about this film "clicks"; it's as if its crew consciously made this film with such tender love and affection for its script, scenery, and cast of characters.
Speaking of which, Powell and Lombard's roles and interplay are the obvious highlights -- so much so that Lombard's role as the loveable, though scatterbrained socialite Irene Bullock is, hands down, my favorite female film role of all time.
Watching Lombard's Irene Bullock quickly flicker through a range of contradictory emotions as she pursues her love for William Powell's Godfrey Smith is absolutely mesmerizing. 5 Stars and My Highest Recommendation.
