Review of My Little Pony: The Movie (2017) by Harry H — 08 Oct 2017

Basically, as a movie by itself, it's pretty weak. But, if you're a fan of the show (as the "Brony" I am,) it's fantastic! You can tell everyone in this put there hearts out onto this thing, and when I left the theater, I just had the purest of joy! It's as if the movie works in spite of itself. And by far the most impressive 2D animation I've seen in a long time, and it's quite impressively innovative, and almost So I had time to think about this movie, and I have to give it two reviews:

1 as an honest critic, and 2 as a biased fanboy. Basically, as a movie by itself, it's pretty weak! But, if you're a fan of the show (as I am,) it's fantastic! I simply love this movie! You can tell everyone in this put their hearts out onto this thing, and when I left the theater, I just had the purest of joy! It's as if the movie works in spite of itself, probably because everyone involved loved and cared on this project so much. And by far the most impressive 2-D animation I've seen in a long time, and it's quite impressively innovative, and almost breaking new territory, by how different it is. I mean, like "The Lego Movie," it's a toy-line to sell a product, but has writers that wanted to do it justice and tell a great story.

Overall, I say as a critic, I'd give it a 70%. Music is okay, villain is too hokey and not enough screen-time to establish himself, the story does feel it's length, and has many other glaring problems. The crew just needed additional writers that were experienced with films, instead of just using the same crew on a television show, and they also needed perhaps a bigger orchestra to really grow the sound. It's essentially the T.V. show stretched into a feature movie. But, as a huge fan of the show, knowing kinda what I was expecting, my biased opinion gives it a solid 100%. There's enough spectacular things in this, including the animation that make this just a top-notch delight for me! Plus the raw cuteness just blasts through your heart non-stop at times! Multiple viewings for me are had! And as one who's tired of seeing the normal cartoon crap that's in theaters today, I feel almost duty-bound to promote this breath-of-fresh-air innocence that is this 2-D animated, charming film with a solid 5-star review!
