Review of My Little Pony: The Movie (2017) by Mike R — 10 Oct 2017
My Little Pony the movie is a beautiful film that shows that 2D Animation still has plenty of potential. However, it should be noted that it's best to keep an open mind when coming in to watch this movie, as it is a bit more made for not only fans of the show, but also children. At the same time, my friend Dru, a man who has never even seen anything related to My Little Pony other than memes, managed to push his own bias aside and find enjoyment in the film. It does have a few pacing issues, hopping from place to place at a brisk pace, but it does so much to expand the already established world of equestria. Of course though, that is speaking from the perspective of someone who has been watching the series since the end of it's third season, so the diverse locations and species are much more appreciated. If anything, one should hope this movie does well to at least show everyone else that "Hey! 2D Animation can still knock your socks off!" Seriously, imagine Disney picking up on this and doing something twice as phenomenal.
So, if speaking from the perspective of a brony, I'd give it a 9 outta ten without question, as it does alot to expand the world but also lets many favored characters have a moment to shine. However, from the perspective of someone who likely would never have seen the movie before and are willing to ignore the fact that it is about pastel horses teaching magic, it could be more confusing at some points and leave one wanting more from the film itself, making it a seven or six.
So, to balance it out, I'd say an eight outta ten. Not the best of the year, but it still has its merits and honestly may be my favorite film this year.
Second to when Star Wars comes out. Maybe. We'll see.
