Very lackluster overall. Story is the tired old "battle of the bands" tale, with not a whole lot else going for it. Lots of contrived plot points, and weird characterization that goes unexplained.

The character designs are still very unappealing, as they're designed to copy Monster High and Bratz...what with the anorexically thin bodies, melon heads, and physics-defying hairstyles. Way to go, Hasbro. Keep on perpetuating that unrealistic body size for little girls to aspire to.

As with the first movie, every single song in this movie is a pop song. Every single one. They're all bland and forgettable. I find it amusing that Hasbro advertised this as a "rock" movie, even having the characters playing electric guitars and drums, yet it's full of pop, pop and more pop.

The villains were very generic as well. You've got the evil leader, the uninterested one, and the silly and airheaded one. Nothing notable here.

"Rainbow Rocks", just like the first EQG movie, is just cashing in on the success of MLP Generation 4. Without the iconic "Friendship is Magic" characters, this movie would have gone largely unnoticed. Hasbro knows this though, so they put in lots of "fan favorite" characters to ensure that the adult fans would see their favorite pony and squee with joy, ignoring the bad writing and terrible character designs.
