Review of My Little Pony: Equestria Girls (2013) by Lauren C — 26 Jun 2013
This is a good movie mainly for fans. There's a lot of inside jokes and nods to the fandom itself that you probably wouldn't get had you never seen the show. It's just as funny as the show.
I was fine with the ponies as humans. You don't think about it too much, and there's some good animal/human gags in there. I thought it was a decent movie, however not without its flaws. It did feel like a long episode of the show rather than a feature length film.
It's pretty short at that. Sunset Shimmer as a villain was kind of two dimensional and didn't really work for me. She reminded me of Trixie for some reason (whom also makes a funny appearance in the movie).
Also though Rainbow Dash is all about being awesome, it doesn't have to be virtually her only line in the movie. In some ways, I think the writers are pandering to the fandom a bit too much and I hope the characters don't become lost along the way.
I don't know another way to put it. Everything else was good. I enjoyed the songs and the Mane Six are still themselves. It might not be my first choice as a storyline for the first My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic movie, but it was entertaining enough.
