Review of My Little Pony: Equestria Girls (2013) by Cam D — 01 Dec 2013
Some decent comedic moments, okay animation (though, admittedly, the animation in some episodes of the show looked better), a catchy song (specifically: "Helping Twilight Sparkle Win the Crown") and some fun references for fans of the show ranging from obvious cameos to subtle background jokes. However, several parts of the story feel terribly cliche, some of the comedy falls flat, the new characters introduced are not interesting, the character interactions that make the show so enjoyable come off as phoned-in in the movie, some parts of the plot that are brought up go nowhere and the whole thing suffers from Hasbro's usual tendency in films to focus too much on advertising toys rather than focusing on telling an enjoyable story.
I expected a lot worse from the initial promo material and while the movie is still just kind of okay it's not absolute garbage either. I would recommend at least one viewing if you're already a fan of the show but if you haven't seen the show before, watch that before even thinking about looking into this movie. If you have kids that like the show, they will most likely enjoy it yet it will likely not bore you to tears like several children's films have a tendency to do. Though be prepared to roll your eyes at some points.
