Review of My Little Eye (2002) by James S — 07 Apr 2009
The early century buzz of reality television and streaming media always meant that it wouldn't be long before a horror movie take on them came along. There's been a number of them now, even one entry in to the Halloween franchise, but My Little Eye was one of the first and it's an effective piece of work.
5 volunteers are selected to take part in a six month web cast where by one of them will win one million dollars provided none of them leave the house they're living in. Of course, it's not long before spooky things begin to happen and skeletons make their way out of their respective owners closets.
My Little Eye manages to scare with a remarkable lack of gore and killing. About 50% of the film is shot from what are supposed to be web cams and the use of green night vision is most effective. The films sense of unease is excellent and the mystery surrounding it very intriguing and it's this that makes the film a worthwhile watch.
Elsewhere there are problems though. The performances are lacking, as are some of the characters in definition. The big twists might as well have been signposted at the beginning, the culprit behind all the strange goings on behaves as if they should have a sign round their neck, and a gratuitous sex scene though not unnecessary to the plot does seem a little glorified.
The end descends into standard horror fare but on the whole this is an enjoyable creepy affair.
