Review of My Life in Ruins (2009) by Bob S — 17 Jun 2011
The concept behind the film seems impervious, but the characters were visibly flat and Vardalosâ(TM)s acting was atrocious. Vardalos has this ability to be sweet and effortlessly funny, but appeared out of tune with the rest of the cast.
The story is about a tour guide (played by Vardalos) who tries to sort out the problems of her vacationers but realizes quickly that they are making her feel better about herself and the direction her life is heading.
The film tried to address too many issues and spread the importance of each too thin. The platonic relationship between the tour guide and a widower (played by Dreyfuss) had potential, but never maximized the emotional response it deserved.
