Review of My Kid Could Paint That (2007) by Alex S — 23 Mar 2008
If movies were rated solely on their ability to generate conversation after watching them, this would probably be a 39/5. The fact that this documentary makes no concrete statements with regard to the director choosing a side in the debate (did a four-year old girl really paint those abstract paintings or did her Dad, an aspiring artist himself, help her?) helps, sure, but there is also a lot more at work.
From art gallery owners to media writers, this film gets all the opinions in there and runs out of steam right when it gets good. Still worth a watch though, if only for the following: a very, very brief clip package of monkeys painting(!) and the chance to see how the media can so easily manipulate opinions (for the record, my sympathy is with Marla for being the victim in this scheme because there is no way in the world you could ever sell me on her painting the works claimed under her name).
