Review of My Kid Could Paint That (2007) by Ben S — 18 Apr 2008
Heartfelt and almost heartbreaking. Marla is adorable!
And how dare naysayers cry fraud after seeing that 60 Minutes segment. Directors, and professional photographers use assistants, and they're ADULTS.
So WHAT if Dad coached her a bit, he's the grown-up helping his kid, w/c is what grown-ups are supposed to do. If Marla was a sculptor and asked for help from her parents w/ clay or a chisel would people have fussed about it this much?
And who's to say the differences in the art styles weren't from Marla trying out new things? I know I'd cringe at drawings I did in my youth. True, it looked like the documented paintings looked less "polished" that the ones she allegedly did on her own, but they may have been from the way this documentary was edited.
In the end, people see what they wanna see, believe what they wanna believe, and spend ridiculous amounts of money on whatever they want, like that senior citizen couple driving a HUMMER(!) who bought Marla's "Ocean" for 20 G's.
