Review of My Kid Could Paint That (2007) by Ben K — 22 Aug 2008
Modern art is stupid, we get that. Not as stupid as the people who pay obscene amounts of money for it. We get that too. The real story, the one Bar-lev tries to answer, is did a four-year old child really paint the paintings she's being credited with? If she didn't then why would anyone want to buy them? Of course why would working-class parents by their child a 4'x6' canvas to paint on? Why won't they let their daughter have a proper childhood? The most effective thing about the documentary is the way the filmmaker is upfront about his doubts and how those doubts changes the ways in which he tells his story.
